Both athletes and non-athletes can benefit from specialist attention to aches and pains around this region. Achilles disorders and tendinitis (tendinopathy) frequently cause pain over the back of the heel.

This pain can be at the bottom of the Achilles tendon as it inserts into the heel bone (insertional type), or over the tendon itself (non-insertional). Swelling and tenderness in and around the Achilles will accompany the pain.

For insertional tendinopathy, a common occurrence will be a bony hard type of swelling. This occurs over the heel’s rear at the Achilles insertion (Haglund deformity or Achilles heel spur).
What Is Involved In Achilles Tendinitis Treatment In Singapore?
The best treatment approach is to modify activity to reduce stress on the tendon. Physiotherapy and a heel lift can be useful measures to provide pain relief. Anti-inflammatory medications may also be used.

When symptoms persist, surgical removal of inflamed tissues surrounding the tendon or removal of the bone spur (calcaneoplasty) may be required.

Advances in minimally invasive techniques and reconstructive methods have allowed reliable pain relief, as well as more rapid recovery after treatment.

Surgery for chronic tears
Chronic or missed Achilles tears are not that infrequent. In many cases, the original tear may have not been diagnosed immediately due to a variety of reasons. Many patients end up with a torn tendon, which has a large gap between the ends.
This traditionally requires a complicated reconstruction involving a significant wound/incision and use of local tendon flaps or a nearby tendon transfer e.g. flexor hallucis longus [FHL] transfer to bridge the gap.

Recently, Dr Tan has been using an arthroscopic technique to perform minimally invasive tendon reconstruction of chronic tears. This has the advantage of minimal wound complications or postoperative issues.
